Lesson Abstract:

Bad and good Bishops. Fight Bishop agaisnt Knigh.

Can be said a bishop is bad when exists many own pawns fixed in its colour, because this pawns limit its work.. A good bishop supplement to its pawns defending the squares of opposite colour to where is fixed them.

Having in mind it, in this position the c8 bishop is clearly a bad bishop, and the d3 is a good bishop. also can be noticed black has "a colour weakness" , the blakcs square are weak because was exchanged the good black´s bishop, the natural defender of that squares. if is white´s turn could play Be2, attacking the h5 pawn, and the only defense would be Kg6, but then the whites king entry by the weak dark sqaures (Ke5-d6-c7).

This is a typical example where the knigth is better than the bishop. In general the knights are better in closed positions, but also are specially good agaisnt a bad bishop. if is black´s turn, any move is bad (zugswang), if moves the bishop then follow Nxc6 and the knigth cant be taken, and if moves the king then the white´s king get g5 and wins the h5 pawn.

if it is white´s turn is posible demostrate wins too, but is no so easy. This is a example about this kind of positions are always advantage for the knight and chances to win, but is not always easy to win, could be dificult to win or even not win in some case. (the procedure to win this in relationship with endgame technique and will be showed in the endgame lessons, but if someone is specially interested can be included in this lesson)

the question could be for that is usefull know this themes:

To start can be said that is usefull for choose that exchanges must be done and winch  not during the game.

For example, in this position, white played Bb5 and Black responded Qb6. this is the good white´s bishop and then white should preserve, but now doesnt seem easy avoid Bxc6, and then white not only exchanged a good piece, also after that black can play Ba6 and the ligth squares are weak, because white exchanged the natural defender. Instead of, exchange the c1 bishop, would be a interesting idea, because is the whites bad bishop.

Deeper, can be said too, what is important be atentive to where fix our pawns and where forced the oponents pawn to fix, if was posible, having in mind our bishop and oponnets bishops. In this lesson will be included examples about this last too.

The lesson objetive is introduce or affirm good and bad bishop concept, and Fight kngith against bishop stuff, specially positions where the kngith is better. In a second lesson will be continued this stuff, paying speciall atention to positions where the bishop is better.
